Henry Casson's Crossword Utility application will allow you to compose crossword grids with blocks or bars.

These can be printed directly or be copied into a Word page. Grid creation allows for 90 degree symmetry and automatic numbering. Moreover, grids can be saved as text, pasted into an email and be opened by a recipient who has the same software.

This latest version has lots of extra features, including a colour choice and printer selection facility. Will allows the creation of larger grids (up to 30 x 30), bar-thickening, easy solution entry, saving grids as bmp images, improved solution entry, improved grid copying and lots of extras. When you have designed the diagram use the mouse to open the grid-filling option. This is freeware.
