Find and Replace 1.1 Description:

Find and Replace is a useful utility that will help you easily locate and replace text in files, file and folder names. Find and Replace is optimized for large search-and-replace operations and for the ability to save the settings for future use against future sets of files should the identical operation need to be performed once again in the future.

Projects:
· A project represents one set of replacements that can be performed. The project holds all of the settings that will apply. You might think of a project as a template for a run. As you make your various selections on the screen these values are stored within the persisted project data so that they can be reused as a group at a later time.

· Projects can be created, deleted, or created from existing projects.

Command-Line Execution:
· In many cases changing every replacement in the requirements will take more than a single run. For example, you may need to replace two different strings in files or replace both filenames and directory names. Since you may wish to group these operations into a single operation, command-line execution is supported.

Selection of Replacement Type:
· The first selection that you will need to make after selecting (or creating) your project is the type of replacement to be performed. Making this selection will then bring up a child panel with settings specific to that replacement type. Be sure to look through all of the settings on all of the tabs shown to insure that you are actually creating the type of run that you wish.

User Prompts:
· If you specify that you want prompting to occur, the utility will prompt you anytime it finds a candidate for replacement as defined by your settings. If this is the case the replacement will not be performed unless you specify to do so. This is a good way to debug a project while you are developing it, especially if you debug it as a ‘Dummy Run'. It also provides a mechanism for a fine level of control when you want to be particularly careful in re: which substitutions are performed.

Results:
· The Results tab will automatically come up when a run is being performed. It shows the current status of the operation and all of the decisions and substitutions that were, or were not, made. It is wise to look through these results while you are developing a project since you may find a need to change some of the values (e.g. the search strings, the rules, etc.) so that it acts differently in the future.

Restoration of Find and Replace Start-Up Position and Size:
· The size and position of the various windows displayed will automatically be remembered and restored the next time that the windows appear.

Built-In Help:
· Clicking the Help button on one of the windows will bring up a display of this file.
