MacMail 3.0 Description:

MacMail identifies correctly most current file formats (Word, Excel, PageMaker, Xpress, etc.). This application has some basic conversion features and is capable of managing Macintosh fonts sent as attachments.

With the explosion of the Internet, data files are often sent between Macintosh and PC computers as attachments to e-mail messages.

In such a case, the first problem for the PC user is that many mail programs don't send plain files, but BinHex or MacBinary containers. Those containers must be recognized as such and handled correctly.

More, the very nature of the file is hard to know, for instance when the sender on the Macintosh side hasn't bothered to add an extension to the file name (*.DOC for a Word file, etc.).

Still more, the default encoding scheme used by many mail programs on the Macintosh can be BinHex, MacBinary or AppleSingle / AppleDouble (see our page on these mail standards for more information) and is not always correctly handled by e-mail client packages on the PC.

Last but not the least, Macintosh font files are special files which are not handled correctly by most default procedures.
