MikeOS 1.0.0 Description:

MikeOS was designed to be a 16-bit operating system for x86 PCs, written in assembly language, which boots from a floppy disk or CD-ROM.It features a text-based dialog-driven user interface, a command-line, support for FAT12 (DOS) floppies and PC speaker sound. It can load external programs and has over 30 system calls. Basic DOS .COM program support is also included.

MikeOS isn't intended to be a general-purpose OS; it is designed as a learning tool to demonstrate how simple operating systems work. If you want to delve into OS development and learn x86 assembly language, MikeOS is a good place to start.

Some of the programs included on the disk images:
· MIKEKERN.BIN - the kernel; don't try to run this as it'll crash the system!
· HELLO.BIN - the classic 'Hello world' program
· HARDLIST.BIN - shows PC hardware as reported by the BIOS
· KEYBOARD.BIN - a music keyboard; press the ZXCVBNM (bottom row) keys to play notes, and Q to quit
· GFXDEMO.BIN - switches to a different video mode and shows a pattern (press Q to quit)
· DOSTEST.BIN - a tiny DOS COM program that also runs natively on Windows XP!
· VLAK.BIN - a small freeware DOS game to demonstrate the DOS compatibility
