Recent items was designed to be a Vista Sidebar Gadget that lets you access a list of your recent items in your sidebar - grouped by location.

Pretty much any kind of document or file except program files and web pages appear here. This could be any office document, adobe document, photos, even visual studio projects. The gadget was designed to preserve screen real estate allowing you to set the number of items you see.
