Wfx_Versions 0.19 Description:

wfx_Versions allows you to find out the current version number of any program downloadable online. wfx_Versions emulates the behavior of Versions file-system plugin for Christian Ghisler's Total Commander.

Paraphrasing what Fabio Chelly said about his TC plugin: "Every day I check on many different websites if there's a new version of my favorite programs available for download. So I decided to create this extension which groups the pages you want to monitor in Firefox"

Comparison with TC plugin:
Advantages:
· because of browser integration, also works with https:// and ftp:// (and file://, although I don't know why you'd try that)
· because of browser integration, also works on other OS-s
· groups applications with equal URL-s to load their web-page only once
· works in background/asynchronously (TC plugin locks TC while scanning for versions)
· update .lists only on request (i.e. you want to wait until you've downloaded the new version before updating the .list)
· special treatment for the '|' character (in version string) so that next scan isn't broken

Disadvantages:
· unrecognized lines are lost after a .list file update (TC plugin only modifies the scanned lines)
· my extension will not support "Searches" like Fabio Chelly's TC plugin


The format of the .list files is defined by Fabio's TC plugin, and in fact the extension is meant to work with the same .list files that the TC plugin uses. However, presence of TC plugin or even TC is not required.

Each line in a .list file has the format of 6 fields separated by '|' (see fields shown during Edit mode by the extension):
· application name/label
· URL of application
· start point (to search from in page)
· pre-string (just before version number/string)
· post-string (just after version number/string)
· version number/string (old)
